Lord Forces Ten Workers to Submit their Resignation

Today, the management of Lord International Co. in Alexandria summoned ten workers who were previously questioned and suspended based on the following accusations:

* Unlawful strike

* Incitement to an unlawful strike

* Deliberate offence to the Company and causing severe material and moral damages

Workers were put in a compromising situation. They had to choose between two options. The first option is to resign for meagre amounts of money (13,000 EGP for 23 years of service - 15,000 EGP for 20 years of service – 8000 EGP for 15 years of service   -7500 EGP for 11 years of service  -6000 EGP for 11 years of service) in clear violation of Labour Law no. 12 for 2003 which stipulates that the workers should receive two months of inclusive wage for every year of service. The other option is to be dismissed and their service terminated without receiving any of their financial rights or their documents, in addition to threatening them that they won’t be able to work anywhere else.

It has to be mentioned that 64 workers were dismissed and 83 workers were referred for investigation because of the strike action workers engaged in on the 26th of August raising the following demands:

1) Changing the minimum wage so that it is not less than 2400 EGP according to the decision of the President of the Republic.

2) Changing annual contracts of casual workers into permanent labour contracts. Casual workers represent the majority of workers. Some workers spent ten or more years in service based on temporary contracts without becoming permanent.

3) Payment of annual profits to workers in sum rather than monthly.

4) Increasing the shift allowance as it is currently five EGP for the morning shift and ten EGP for the night shift.

The management of the Company refused to negotiate the demands of workers. So, they resorted to the Labour Bureau. However, the labour inspector turned out to be biased to the employer. Thus, the Company continued its unjust treatment of workers; and threatened to shut down factories and stop production lines. It actually dismissed 83 workers and referred 64 for investigation.

CTUWS condemns the measures taken by the management of Lord International Co. to terrorize workers who practiced their right to peaceful strike guaranteed by the Constitution of Egypt and International agreements. The management of the company also committed gross violations of the Labour Law encouraged by the support it had from the Labour Bureau.

CTUWS demands that all competent authorities perform their role in the protection of the rights of workers; and calls upon all democratic forces to show solidarity with the workers of Lord International Co in their defense of their legitimate rights.
