On the afternoon of Monday 23rd of October 2017, Ahmed Abdel Mordy, head of the union for workers in the adult education authority announced that he was striking in the premises of the Ministry of Education in protest against the series of arbitrary procedures that were taken by the authority against him and in confrontation with the independent union for workers in the authority.

The head of the Adult Education Authority took a decision to ban the union from collecting the membership fees of its members and addressed Bank Mist asking to freeze all forms of banking relations with the union despite that this is in contradiction with all established banking policies and customs.

The procedures taken against the union coincided with procedures taken against its chief. The head of the authority issued a decree transferring him from his work in Cairo to the city of Kafr Shokr in the governorate of Qalioubia. This was followed by decision number 682 dated 25/9/2017 deducting five days of his salary without any investigation. The arbitrary decisions continued with decree number 747 dated 16/7/2017 seconding the head of the union to the Aswan branch for a year

The center for Trade Union and Workers Services expresses its deep concern for what the union for workers in the adult education authority and its head are subjected to and stresses once more that it denounces what the governmental departments have been intent on during the past months including harassing independent unions and besieging them and banning them from receiving membership fees. CTUWS also denounces the oppression of union members.

The arbitrary procedures that are taken against the union for workers in the adult education authority constitute a stark violation to the International labour convention number 87. It also ignores the rules of the Egyptian constitution in articles 76 and 13. It also ignores the ruling of the constitutional court number 120 for the year 30 which was issued to assert the constitutionality of protecting union members from transfer and secondment.

In expressing its solidarity with Ahmed Abdel Mordy head of the union for workers in the adult education authority CTUWS stresses once more in the danger of the antagonistic route that the governmentaldepartments take with regards to independent unions and warns against its repercussions. It also demands the cancelation of all procedures that were taken against the union for workers in the adult education authority
