Committee for the Defense of Trade Union Freedoms and Labor Rights Resumes its Meetings

After about six-month stopping following the spread of Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19), the Committee for the Defense of Trade Union Freedoms and Labor Rights held its weekly meeting yesterday Tuesday, August 25, 2020 in the presence of representatives of Real Estate Tax unions, employees of the Adult Education Authority, irregular employment, services of drivers in Qalyubia , chemical workers, quality workers, pensioners, Tanta Flax, and representatives of workers' offices in the parties.

The meeting discussed the latest developments in discussions with the Ministry of Manpower in the suspended files of The Trade Union Committees, which were unable to hold the elections or those that were unable to reconcile their situation.

“Ashraf Al Sherbini”, the lawyer of the Center for Trade Union & Workers' Services (CTUWS), explained the legal procedures that have been taken and the latest developments in the cases that have been filed by the affected unions and the legal timings and the dates of hearings these cases.

The attendees also reviewed the contacts of the trade union committees with the Ministry of Manpower, which is still slow due to the Coronavirus crisis, the attendees stressed on the need to communicate with the ministry by preparing files with the trade union committees that have been finished checking and to ensure the papers integrity and the procedures that have been followed by the founders of the unions, and yet the ministry failed to register those unions in violation of the Trade Union Law.

Attendees also reviewed the dialogues that occurred between representatives of some Independent Trade Unions and the ILO on the "Strengthening Labour Relations and its Institutions in Egypt" program.

In this regard, the attendees suggested holding a seminar through the application of Zoom on “Problems that unions face during the establishment processes”..and inviting all parties concerned to participate in the seminar.

The attendees also discussed the future action plan and how to engage with the upcoming events, notably the elections of the House of Representatives, and it was agreed to adopt a number of points defending Trade Union Freedoms, Labor Rights and making those points for discussion with parties and independent candidates in order to adopt those points in their electoral programs, and it was also agreed to support Independent Candidates whose programs and situations are biased toward labour issues and workers.
