The six workers had been arrested from their homes early in the morning of Saturday September 23, 2016 after the independent union of public transportation authority workers entered into negotiations with about a number of demands. They included the retrun of the authority of the ministry of transportation not the Cairo governerate and a 100% increase of administrative incentives to increase it to 200%, a 40% contagion and hardship compensation and a full day’s wage on official holidays. Security authorities arrested the workers and took them to an unknown place before they appeared in the prosecution’s office (after their place was unknown for nearly a week during which CTUWS presented complaint number 12201 about their disappearance on 25/9/2016. Their families also presented a similar complaint). The prosecution office ordered their detention on October 4th for 15 days pending investigations and in a complimentary investigation session on October 17th, where they were accused of instigating workers to strike and joining a banned organization that intends to obstruct one of the state’s facilities. This was denied completely by the defense who pleaded the falseness of the accusations as there is no material evidence asking for the release of the workers. They were presented to the prosecution again on October 19th. Their detention was renewed for a further 15 days that end on the 6th of November and it is expected that the prosecution may order the renewal or release of the workers or decide to refer the case to court and set a hearing so that their trial may start.
